Marsh Farm AD

Marsh Farm is a 2,000-acre mixed beef, sheep and arable farm in Basildon, Essex, which has been in the Sell family for over 12 decades.

Farm Manager, Alex Sell, looked in to AD in 2013 as a way of diversifying the farm’s income stream. He then made the decision to go ahead with construction in 2015.

After experiencing problems with the initial developer, Marsh Farm approached BioWatt in February 2016 to finish the project. BioWatt knew of Privilege Finance for having a solid understanding of how the AD industry works, which enabled them to take on the project and provide a quick turnaround on the finance agreement.

The plant was successfully commissioned in April 2017, and just 12 months thereafter, the plant was refinanced to a longer-term lending solution after the initial risks were reduced.

The plant currently runs on a diet of 60% crop and grass silage and 40% cattle manure with some chicken manure.

"We knew of Privilege Finance for having a solid understanding of how the AD industry works, which enabled them to take on projects that traditional lenders may not. Luckily, they were able to provide a quick turnaround on the project finance agreement and the project accelerated from there."

Financial Times letter to editor in response to: “Can farmers achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050?”

It is widely recognised that British farmers are some of the most innovative in the world.
